The Breeders Cup will be expanded to an 11 race format that would take place during two days.

In addition to the eight traditional races that have taken place since 1984 when the championships began the events board of directors announced three new $1 million races: the Breeders Cup Dirt Mile for 3yearolds and up the Filly & Mare Sprint and the Juvenile Turf for colts and fillies. The board also created three other new races carrying purses of $250000 each one.

With $4 million in purses the first day of the new Breeders Cup becomes the secondrichest day in American racing. The Breeders Cup will be run Oct. 2627 this year at Monmouth Park in Oceanport N.J.

Now on the race will face imposing competition from the new Breeders Cup Filly & Mare Sprint the day before. Two years ago the $125000 Laurel Futurity attracted the eventual Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro. It is possible that he would have never run at Laurel if the new Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf would have existed before.

The event is held at a location that changes every year. All the locations have been in the United States except in 1996 when the races were at the Woodbine Racetrack in Canada.

The Breeders Cup was created as a yearend championship for North American thoroughbred racing and also attracts the best horses from other parts of the world especially Europe. The Breeders Cup was founded in 1984 by John R. Gaines a leading thoroughbred owner and breeder.
