I just skimmed your “question” – - (really, an essay) – and I’ll just give my opinion on the fear of riding a larger horse – - it’s funny how just a few inches in height feels so very different. I’m not sure why this phenomenon occurs, but anyway, you just have to go ahead and start riding. Like everything else you do, you just get used to it. Obviously taller horses are lager and stronger all around, but really, the same riding principles apply, and I’m sure you’ll be just fine!

16 handers are a bit much to handle for someone not used to them. I’m a shorty so I prefer shorty horses
My horse is about 15 hands. She is tall enough, but you don’t feel like you’re going to die if you fall. That’s my recommendation, anything under 16 hands. 15.2 hand horse would be good, especially for transitional purposes. Haflingers are fabulous, too, but very expensive. But if you aren’t buying the horse, I guess that wouldn’t matter

move up slowly. first try a 14hh pony when your looking. then try a 14.2hh get my drift. who said you have to get a bigger pony anyway. just get one the same size.

I’ve had the same problem. I have been leasing a 14.3 pony for the past 5-6 years. I just went off to college this year and I am now riding horses as big as 18hh. It is defiantly a huge adjustment. I would recommend starting to ride ponies that are a little taller than what you are used to. Also when you ride, have your instructor there with you, start off on a lunge line or lead rope. Have your instructor give you a background on the horse, ask if s/he spooks, doesnt like certain things, etc.
